Thread or ‘spider’ veins are dilated capillary veins in the skin. They may be red, blue or purple. They may run in lines or be arranged in clusters. These veins may be flat or raised above the skin surface.

Whilst spider veins do not pose major health risks, they can cause discomfort or embarrassment.

Sclerotherapy is considered the ‘gold standard’ treatment for spider veins. Sclerotheraphy is a quick, injection-based treatment that seals the veins shut and causes it to fade from view. This is a proven procedure that has been in use since the 1930’s.

A solution is injected into the vein to ‘sclerose’ or scar the vein shut. The solution irritates the vein, causing the vein walls to become sticky. Over time, the vein seals shut and is reabsorbed back into the body.

You cannot have sclerotherapy treatment if you are pregnant. You can have sclerotherapy if you take birth control pills. If you have had a blood clot in the past, your eligibility will be decided on an individual basis, and will depend on the overall health of the area needing treatment.

At Simply Aesthetics, we use Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate (STS). This is a detergent sclerosant. It works by disrupting the protein molecules in the vein cell wall.

STS is an approved, safe and reliable product.

We use a product called STS that is approved for use in sclerotherapy. It is safe, reliable and painless when used in low concentrations. This product has a much lower incidence of adverse reactions such as skin discoloration, inflammation or ulceration when compared with other solutions. There have been rare reports of allergic reactions to STS.

A small needle is used to inject a solution into the vein, causing it to collapse and fade over time. Injections are delivered using very fine needles to minimise pain. Different concentrations of sclerosing solution are used depending on the size of the vein being treated.

Depending on the number of spider veins in the leg, a number of sessions may be required to achieve the desired results. Normally 3-5 sessions are sufficient.

Each injection will sting a little. This burning sensation will last only a few seconds. Most people tolerate the procedure and do not require any type of anesthetic. Most patients claim the treatment is much less painful than they expected.

Sclerotherapy treatment takes between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated. A course of 3 – 5 treatments may be required to achieve the desired results.

The veins will start to fade within a few weeks. It can take up to 12 weeks to see the full benefits of treatment. After this time, you will often find that the veins continue to improve for up to a year.

Please be aware that the treated area will look worse before it looks better.

You will need to wear strong support tights or stockings for up to six weeks following treatment. Failure to do so may compromise the effectiveness and outcome of your treatment. You must bring support tights or stockings with you to your appointment.

Immediately after a treatment, you may experience some redness and bruising. This usually resolves within a week. We recommend taking arnica tablets for a week pre- and post-treatment.

Please be aware that the treated area will look worse before it looks better. This is normal but please keep it in mind when planning your treatment.

For 1 week following treatment, avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen.

For 2 weeks following treatment, do not undertake any vigorous or high impact exercise. You must also avoid sunbathing, saunas, solarium’s and hot baths for this amount of time.

For 4 weeks following treatment, you must not fly.
