Botulinum Toxin Injections Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by bacteria. In large amounts, this may cause illness. However, small amounts of diluted botulinum toxin can be used safely in cosmetic medicine to enable the controlled relaxing of muscles. Repeated use of the facial muscles can cause lines and wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin injections temporarily relax the muscles by blocking signals from the nerves. The aim of the treatment is to break the habit of the muscles and so reduce the development of wrinkles. Treatment can both soften existing lines and prevent the formation of new wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin is a prescription drug. It is therefore a legal requirement that either a Nurse Prescriber or Doctor prescribes it.
Effective in treating:
Crow’s feet
A ‘down-turned’ mouth
Frown lines between the eyes
Dimpled chin
Forehead furrows
Botulinum toxin injections can also be used to treat excessive sweating known as hyperhydrosis.
