Pigmentation

Pigmentation

A common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin are darker than the surrounding skin. It occurs when special cells in the skin make too much of the pigment called melanin. Hyperpigmentation may appear as freckles, age spots, or larger areas of darkened skin.

Hyperpigmentation may be caused by injury or inflammation of the skin, sun damage, abnormal skin growths, hormone changes, pregnancy, or other medical conditions.

Certain medicines, including some anticancer drugs, can also cause hyperpigmentation. Several lifestyle changes and treatments can help, especially sun protection and skin care.

Hyperpigmentation can’t always be prevented, but protecting your skin from the sun helps:

• Apply sunscreen every day. Choose one that’s “broad spectrum” (blocks ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB) with an SPF of 30 or higher.

• Avoid too much sun exposure.

• Use physical blockers such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

• Wear protective clothing and hats.

I have selected products that I feel are particularly beneficial to pigmentation sufferers, which can be used alongside, or to replace your existing skincare regime.
