Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by bacteria. In large amounts, this may cause illness. However, small amounts of diluted botulinum toxin can be used safely in cosmetic medicine to enable the controlled relaxing of muscles. Repeated use of the facial muscles can cause lines and wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin injections temporarily relax the muscles by blocking signals from the nerves. The aim of the treatment is to break the habit of the muscles and so reduce the development of wrinkles. Treatment can both soften existing lines and prevent the formation of new wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription drug. It is therefore a legal requirement that either a Nurse Prescriber or Doctor prescribes it.

Prior to any treatment by Simply Aesthetics, you will have an in-depth and comprehensive consultation with a Nurse Prescriber. A thorough medical history will be taken and the treatment process explained. This discussion will enable you to ask questions and identify areas requiring treatment.

Once you are happy to commence with treatment, you will be required to sign a consent form.

Botulinum toxin is sold commercially under brand names such as Azzalure ®, Dysport ®, Botox ®, Xeomin ® and Bococuture ®. We only use trusted leading brands at Simply Aesthetics.

Only small amounts of botulinum toxin are used cosmetically, making this a very safe treatment. Occasionally the following side effects can occur:

  • Slight bruising at injection site, this is not common but more likely around the eyes
  • Slight redness post treatment
  • Transient headaches
  • Slight drooping of the eyelid- this normally resolves in a week or two

The skin is thoroughly cleansed. Small amounts of Botulinum toxin will then be injected with a micro fine needle. Occasionally you may require a top up injection – usually performed two to four weeks later. It is always better to inject a conservative amount the first time and add more if required.

The injections are slightly uncomfortable but the treatment is quick. Local anaesthetic is not required. Afterwards arnica cream or cold compresses are applied to help prevent redness and bruising. Initially there may be some red marks which will fade within an hour or so.

The treatment itself takes only a few minutes. However, you will need to take part in an in-depth consultation and provide informed consent before the treatment can be provided.

Facial lines will begin to soften after three to five days. It may take up to two weeks to see the full effects.

Results last for three to four months, although repeat treatments have been shown to last longer. To maintain results, treatment is recommended every three to six months.

Aftercare is important. You will be given a leaflet to take home with instructions to follow. These include:

  • Do not massage the treated area at all. If the area is washed, pat dry very gently with a soft towel. Do not rub the treated area for 48 hours.
  • Do not bend excessively or lie down for at least 4 hours
  • Do exercise the treated muscles by tensing them and relaxing them for the first hour after treatment.
  • Do not fly for 12 hours.

People who suffer from excessive sweating, or ‘hyperhydrosis’, produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature.

Axillary hyperhydrosis specifically affects the armpits. Where other treatments have not worked, botulinum toxin injections may be used to treat this condition.

Up to 15 injections will be made in each armpit. These are about 1cm apart and evenly spread. We may target the treatment by using a dye to show up the areas where sweating is greatest.

A course of treatment takes about 30 minutes and you should notice an improvement within a week.

The botulinum toxin blocks the the nerve signals to the over-active sweat glands, preventing the glands from producing sweat. Over six to twelve weeks new nerve endings grow. This means that the effects of treatment last for several months but will eventually wear off.

Additional courses of treatment can be given once the effects of the first course have worn off. Your practitioner will advise you about when to return for further treatment.
